Kippax and Nigel get air time from the BBC

Kippax and their principal cornet player, Nigel Darbyshire, were featured on Radio Leeds last sunday when their recording of ‘The Cornet King’ was aired. The weekly programme, Yorkshire Brass, saw Nigel’s fine solo from the CD ‘Celebration’ sandwiched between tracks from Brighouse and Fodens.

Elgar, Formby, a princess and a camel

Saturday evening’s themed cabaret night saw the Band perform our ‘Last night of the Proms’ concert to a full house in the Band club.

The three-part concert saw the Band commence with traditional English compositions including 2 with guest singer Jennie Coates. A lighter second set featured solos from Becky with Sparke’s arrangement of ‘Leaning on a Lamp post’ featuring Phil Driscoll as our very own George Formby, and further solos from Nigel (The Watermill) and Lee (Blaydon Races).

The Bass section then stole the limelight with a boisterous rendition of the Hippopotamus Song before the closing ‘In a Persian market’ featuring our very own Camel, Beggars, Juggler and ‘Beautiful’ Princess (who seemed to enjoy the part far too much).

The third and final set paid tribute to the traditional Proms concert with favourites Pomp & Circumstance and Jerusalem completing the proceedings.

Our cabaret evenings our proving to be a great formula and once again the audience were very complimentary of the Band’s performance and an entertaining evening.

Welcome back Cat!

Saturday evening’s Cabaret concert saw the welcome return of Percussionist Cat Nye. Cat has spent the past 12 months on a work placement in Stevenage, but has rejoined our ranks on her return north. Welcome back Cat.

Gearing up for the 'Last Night of the Proms'

There’s no such thing as a summer break at Kippax! With our Last Night of the Proms evening just a fortnight away, David and the Band are busy preparing the evening’s concert programme.

With previous years’ cabaret events proving a huge success, the Band are determined to ensure that our ‘very British’ evening will prove to be just as successful.
