Soprano Cornet Faye Thompson

Faye started playing at an early age moving from horn to cornet.  Finally she settled on sop at the age of 16 after a bet with her dad who told her ‘If you make a decent job of it I’ll buy you a new instrument!’  It ended up costing him a new Schilke (Which she still plays today).

Faye joined Kippax originally in 1997 after helping out for one of the club concerts and left in December 2004 to have her son Alex.  After a 2 year break from playing she joined Knottingley Silver and then Gawthorpe ’85 before rejoining Kippax in June 2008.

Second Cornet Tracey Sillito

Tracey has played on both front and back row for Kippax and currently lends her talents to the 2nd cornet part. She was previously a member of the Yorkshire Evening Post band.

Second Cornet Richard Barker

Richard joins after an 18 month break from brass banding, during this time having taken a keen interest in his original instrument of choice Trumpet, he now plays regularly with the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra and other small brass ensembles.

Having previously graced the backrow at Yorkshire Imps for around two years between 2005 and 2007, returning back to playing with them after a 15 year break. During that short period with the Imps, he experienced the bands return to the Championship section, playing in regional and national finals as well as participating at Pontins/Butlins and other contests which was a great grounding for a reintroduction to brass banding.

Having played many years ago with Bob Walker at the helm of Sharlston Brass Band, Richard's first rehearsal with Kippax was not only a great chance to return to banding but was also a surprise opportunity to re-establish contact with Bob and other players from many years ago. It was also a nostalgic moment, given he used to sit on the steps of the band room almost 30 years ago listening from outside whilst visiting his aunt who lived in the nearby flats!

Third Cornet Bob Walker

Bob Walker really needs no introduction with over 50 years on the banding scene. His musical background began with the Salvation Army when he was taught to play the cornet at the age of six. At 16years old he joined the Leeds Rifles Territorial Army Military Band which later became the Yorkshire Volunteers and served as a Bandsman for 17 years. It was his love of brass bands that took him back to his roots and in 1984 became an active member of the Yorkshire Brass Band Fraternity.

It was the desire of Bob that he would teach his son and other children to play brass instruments and it was this determination that was the foundation stone of the Sharlston Colliery Band which he was Musical Director for 16 years.

The last three years Bob has been Musical Director with Horbury Victoria Band and in 2006 won the Yorkshire Area 3rd section with the band. In October 2007 Bob’s celebrated 50 year’s of banding with an evening of music making, the proceeds donated to Wakefield Hospice.

After a long spell with the stick we are now fortunate that he now is enjoying his music making on the back line cornet section here at Kippax.

Third Cornet Liam Spedding

Liam is the most recent recruit on the back row, joining in July 2008. The oldest son of Sam Spedding (Flugel) Liam has fitted in well with the rest of the back row team, especially learning from the vastly experienced Bob Walker.

Liam started playing the cornet at age 5 with the Lofthouse 2000 junior band (in 2000). He then joined Stanley Newmarket junior band in 2005 . Liam continued his development back at the Lofthouse intermediate band in 2006 on flugel. At the beginning of 2008 he joined the Crofton Silver Junior Band once again on flugel. He is currently studying for his grade 4.
