The Euphonium and Baritone Section
Colin started playing the tenor horn at the age of nine with the Ackton Hall band, tutored by their Solo Horn player Tony Hill, he progressed up the section until winning the band’s slow melody contest in 1970 and beating Tony who resigned the Solo Horn seat and went to play Principal Cornet. Colin continued Solo Horn until a move onto the Euph in about 1974. Colin continued at Ackton Hall on Solo Euphonium until he left for a new challenge at Kippax on Eb Bass in June 1977, a move that he credits for bringing out the sound of today from the insipid squeak of pre-Bass days. He moved back on to Euphonium in 1980 as 2nd Euph and onto Solo Euph in 1981, he is now into his 27th year in the top chair and can recall seeing off about eleven partners. {must change his soap} Colin has held several positions on the Committee and has been Band Chairman since 1998. We are pleased to welcome Matthew Clark to the band, originally signed to provide cover for Adrian Longbottom on 2nd Baritone at the Area. However, Adrian decided not to return, so Matthew found himself with a permanent job! Matthew has previously played with Yorkshire Evening Post, Garforth Brass, Barnsley Building Society and South Milford. He seems to be coping easily with the demands of this year's test piece and is an excellent addition to the baritone section.
