Hi Andy
Just a short note to say thanks for your efforts
and help with the concert last week. Hope it wasn`t too much hard work for
the band.
Please give them all my thanks also for their
support and playing on the night. It would have been hard work for me
without them!
My best wishes to Keith and everyone concerned
for the future and particularly the National in September.
Thanks again.

12/5/07Hello
I used to play 2nd cornet for Kippax between 1988 and 1991. I
subsequently moved to Newcastle, Australia. I played principal cornet
for Maitland City Brass Band, before getting involved with Trad Jazz,
playing with the Tiger Ragtime Jazz Band.
We play every Thursday night in a pub called the Albion Hotel. There has
been a Yorkshire couple drinking in there of late, and I have passed the
time of day with them from time to time. However, it was only when
talking to the fella tonight, that I discovered he was Mal Reilly. Well
blow me down. The Fairburns and Pinegars may be interested.
By the way, I have very fond memories of Kippax, and I wished Australian
bands showed the same commitment. We were the whipping boys of the
Championship Section, and I loved it.
Lots of love

hopefully we'll see you at Harrogate.

have just being browsing the site again and
realised you have missed me off the past and present page. I was a member
of the band in the late 70's and worked my way up to Soprano Cornet. I
think I may have followed Charlie Bailey. It was in the Brian Nicholson
era. I notice I am on one of the photos which I still have at home along
with my treasured copy of the our first album.
I would be pleased if you would record my name. My
maiden name was Christine Dowling. I was a friend of Nicola Darbyshire
(nee Brownridge)
Thanks

Hi all, Just a quick note to say all the best for the Butlins contest.
Hope you do well. Also good luck with the entertainments contest. Hope to
see a few of you at Butlins. If you are around Saturday night get into
Jacks bar. I have landed the horn job with Grimstien. Should be a good
laugh. Once again all the best.

Dear Kippax – Well done on the rules for next
year’s competition. As you know (but any other reader will not,) I do not
attend the band’s committee meetings and had no previous knowledge of the
rules until I read them just now, as released today on the band’s website.
By inviting bands to enter into the spirit of the
competition and by relaxing the rules on “Victorian style registration” I
believe you are introducing a necessary evil into the equation which will
help busy people in a busy world to continue to enjoy band contesting –
very well done indeed.
Best wishes- see you all on Aug. 14th after our
hols.
Keith
Wardle.

deserved. I really hope you now take the Yorkshire Area by storm.
Please pass on my sincere congratulations to the band

Many congratulations to my old friends at Kippax Band, who are now the
newly-crowned Kings of Butlins (and quite a bit richer from the prize
money!). Good to see the Band back where it belongs: on the winner's
podeum. The re-marraige of Wardle/Kippax was the best decision the Band
has taken for many a year, and I'm sure that today's victory at the
Mineworker's contest will be the first of many under Keith's
inspirational leadership.
Remember....Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing!
Very best wishes from an ex-Kipp

Good to see an ex-Sherburn High School Band player still playing.
Good luck to the Band at Butlins....we might even bump into you! I will be
there with the band that I have been with since I moved southwards in
1991, Tewkesbury Town Band. Not quite up to your standard but we will be
doing our best to defend our Fourth Section title from last year!
Great web-site....almost as good as ours!

Hi, Andy, I have
recently purchased an antique cornet which bears the following inscription
on the bell ; presented to A.W.Jones Kippax Old Brass Band.
Before I restore it I would be grateful of any history you could shed light
on the instrument a Bb cornet F.Besson, in particular who A.W.Jones was in
the band and at what period.
I really would appreciate your reply,
Many thanks

10/10/05Yes, it's me
again Andy - just thought I'd irritate you a bit more.
Re: "Ian Wilkinsons Oompah Band" in Nigels biog.
It could read :- He also played trumpet for
"The Willi Schneider Oompah Show", a Bavarian Band run by Ian Wilkinson.
( I was Willi Schneider verstehen ?)
I can tell you a tale about Nigels Bavarian debut .
The first time he played for me, thinking he wasn't a
big drinker, I offered him £60 cash or alternatively £45 and free beer
for the night. He opted for the latter and amazed me with his awsome ale
capacity, leaving me well out of pocket on the deal !! (He still played
note perfect all night !)

1/10/05Andy, Just a note
about Derek Dawsons biog.
"Rienzi" was the Area piece in 1963, not 1962.
1962 was "Salute to Youth" and 1964 was "Symphony of
Marches"
Please don't think I'm being "Picky", it's just that
it's best to have it right isn't it.
It's amazing how I can recall everything in great
detail from 40 years ago, but if you were to ask me what I was doing
last Tuesday I wouldn't have a clue !!

Andy - Great stuff with the web update - congrats.
The "Tweaked" presentation and layout gives it a new
feel.
Personally it makes me feel that the band is moving
forward again.Ian Wilkinson
Cheers Ian - lots to do yet! |

Hello David - it was lovely for me and my family to see this site, it
brought back some lovely memories of the people, and the competitions and
the fun we used to have at the Club.
It is 20 years this time since John Butler (my husband) died, and I
wondered what had happened to the Shield that had been donated to the band
in John's memory. Is it still in circulation?
Whatever happened to the Ladies Committee?????

A few players that I remember that are not on
your list, the Principal cornet when I started was Colin Horsefield or
Tush, as he had gold front teeth. He also went on to play solo Horn
A couple more cornets were Rupert Holland, who played Rep and Andrew Carr
who also aspired to Rep, he used to cycle from Castleford with the cornet
in his saddle bag with No case!!
Keep up the good work and I'll see you in the
new year

I can think of one percussion player not
mentioned. He was George Dean who played at Kippax in the 70's. Also George
taught Dave Stevens. Love the site and I'm delighted to see that Keith is
back on Bass Trom. Why not mention past band Chairmen e.g. Albert Wright
and John Butler as it was their vision and expertise that the Kippax Band
Club was formed.
Best Wishes
Tony Spencer

Do
you have any information about my grandfather who, I understand was the
conductor of the band when they won the silver prize at the Crystal palace
in the early part of last century. His name was Alfred Jones and he was a
cornet player.
