Musical Director:

DAVID HORN

The Kippax Band are pleased to announce that David Horn has accepted the position as Musical Director from the 1st of July 2008

David Horn was born in Doncaster deep in the heart of the South Yorkshire coal mining area and because of this spent most of his early playing with the colliery bands of the area.

In 1971 he became the Solo Horn Player of Brodsworth Colliery Band before moving on to the famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band. In 1974 while with Grimethorpe he took part in the first ever brass band performance at The Sir Henry Wood promenade concerts under the baton of Elgar Howarth.

In 1982 David became the mineworkers Solo Champion and by 1984 he had moved across the Pennines to join the world famous Fairey Engineering band.

During his time with Fairey they became National Champions, British Open Champions, BBC Band of the Year, and David was a featured soloist on many occasions on CD, TV, and Radio.

On leaving Fairey he took up the coveted post as the horn player in the famous James Shepherd Versatile Brass, and was founder member of the Sheffield based Harlequin Brass group, but because of increased demands as a conductor and soloist David left this position after eighteen month.

He has toured as a soloist and conductor to Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Hong Kong and Latin America and has been the Horn tutor on a number of summer school courses.

As well as his many playing achievements David has over the past 35 years worked as a conductor and band trainer with all levels of bands, achieving many successes with his infectious enthusiasm and dedication to hard work, along with in-depth experience and understanding of what makes “Players Tick” and give of their best.
